Lombok to Labuan Bajo Liveaboard: The Classic 4D3N Crossing Guide for 2027

July 4, 2026 Mira Mahendra

A Lombok to Labuan Bajo liveaboard is a one-way 4D3N sailing crossing that departs Lombok, stops at Moyo, Satonda, Kenawa, and Gili Bola, then finishes inside Komodo National Park. Expect US$150–350 per person per night on most boats, calm seas April–November, and Komodo park fees booked through the Siora app.

Most travelers reach Komodo by flying straight into Labuan Bajo. A smaller, smarter group boards a boat in Lombok instead and lets the islands come to them — waking up beside a waterfall island one morning and a volcanic crater lake the next, before the dragons ever appear. Our crew has been arranging this crossing alongside our core Labuan Bajo liveaboard departures since 2015, and it remains the route we recommend to anyone who values the journey as much as the park itself.

This guide covers the classic 4D3N crossing in detail: every stop, realistic 2027 price bands, sea conditions month by month, one-way flight logistics, and an honest comparison against a direct Labuan Bajo departure — so you can decide which suits your trip before you commit at our booking desk.

The Route at a Glance

The crossing covers roughly 250 nautical miles of the Flores Sea, tracing the north coast of Sumbawa from west to east. It is a one-way trip: you embark in Lombok and disembark in Labuan Bajo, with no backtracking. The four signature stops sit conveniently along the sailing line:

  • Kenawa Island — a tiny savanna islet in the Alas Strait, crowned by a single hill with 360-degree views back toward Lombok’s Rinjani.
  • Moyo Island — a forested nature reserve off Sumbawa’s north coast, home to the tiered Mata Jitu waterfall and quiet snorkeling bays.
  • Satonda Island — a volcanic islet facing Mount Tambora, with a saltwater crater lake ringed by jungle you can walk to in ten minutes.
  • Gili Bola — a small island near the Sape Strait with healthy shallow reef, the classic final snorkel before entering Komodo waters.

After Gili Bola, the boat crosses the Sape Strait into Komodo National Park, where the final day delivers the headline sights — Padar’s ridgeline, the dragons, and the pink sand. If you want to see how these park days are normally sequenced, our itinerary page maps the standard routes.

Day-by-Day: The Classic 4D3N Crossing

Day 1 — Lombok to Kenawa Island

Boarding is usually early morning from east Lombok, timed so the boat crosses the Alas Strait before the afternoon wind builds. By early afternoon you are anchored at Kenawa for the hill walk and a first swim, then the boat sails on through the evening toward Saleh Bay. Dinner is served underway — the first of many meals cooked fresh onboard by the crew.

Day 2 — Moyo Island and Satonda

Morning at Moyo means a guided walk to Mata Jitu waterfall, where limestone pools step down through the forest. After lunch the boat repositions to Satonda for the crater lake walk and a reef snorkel off the beach. This is the slowest, most restorative day of the trip — no crowds, no schedule pressure, no phone signal for most of it. Overnight, the captain makes the long run east along Sumbawa’s coast while you sleep.

Day 3 — Gili Bola and the Sape Strait Crossing

A morning snorkel at Gili Bola breaks up the passage, then comes the trip’s one genuinely open-water leg: the Sape Strait. In dry season this is typically a steady two-to-three-hour crossing; the crew times it for the calmest window of the day. By late afternoon you are inside Komodo National Park, usually anchoring near Gili Lawa or Komodo Island for a sunset that feels earned.

Day 4 — Padar, Komodo Dragons, Pink Beach, Labuan Bajo

The finale is a compressed best-of-Komodo day. We schedule departures around the morning Siora session (06:00–11:00) so guests catch Padar Island at sunrise, walk with the rangers among the dragons on Komodo Island, and swim at Pink Beach before the midday heat. Manta Point is added when currents cooperate. The boat docks in Labuan Bajo by late afternoon. Travelers who want the park at a gentler pace often extend with our dedicated 4D3N Komodo liveaboard instead of squeezing everything into one day.

Lombok to Labuan Bajo Liveaboard Prices in 2027

Crossing trips follow the same per-night price bands as standard Komodo liveaboards, though most scheduled (open trip) crossings sit in the budget-to-midrange bands. Luxury crossings are almost always private charters.

Boat classPer person / night4D3N total (3 nights)What to expect
Budget phinisiUS$150–250US$450–750Shared or simple AC cabins, shared decks, hearty local meals
Midrange phinisiUS$250–350US$750–1,050Private ensuite cabins, better galley, smaller guest count
Luxury phinisi (private charter)US$800–1,500+US$2,400–4,500+Boutique suites, dedicated crew, fully tailored itinerary

Park fees are charged separately because they only apply to the days you spend inside Komodo National Park — typically one to two days on this route. For 2027, foreigners pay IDR 250,000 (about US$16) per day entrance, plus IDR 75,000 per day guide fee and IDR 25,000 per day conservation fee, all paid through the official Siora app. Ranger trekking fees are per group of up to five: IDR 200,000 on Komodo and IDR 150,000 on Padar, plus a IDR 25,000 harbour fee. Full breakdowns for every boat class live on our pricing page, and you can browse the specific vessels running crossings on our fleet page.

Sea Conditions Month by Month

This route involves more open water than a park-only trip, so timing matters more. Three straits shape your comfort: Alas (day 1), Saleh Bay (day 2, usually sheltered), and Sape (day 3, the most exposed).

MonthsSea state on the crossingOur take
April–JuneCalm to moderate; hills still green from the rainsExcellent window — our favorite for photographers
July–AugustDry and reliable, but trade winds add afternoon chop in the straitsFine on well-skippered boats; book early, peak demand
September–NovemberCalmest straits of the year, warm water, long dry daysThe sweet spot for the full crossing
December–MarchWet season; open-water legs can be rough, many boats pause crossings January–FebruarySkip the crossing — this is manta season, so take a direct park departure instead

The short version: the crossing belongs to the April–November dry season. In the December–March manta months, the park itself is superb but the Sape Strait is not — that is when we steer guests toward direct departures and more time at the manta aggregation sites.

One-Way Logistics: Flights, Bags, and the Siora App

The one-way structure is easier to arrange in 2027 than it has ever been. Fly into Lombok (LOP) from Bali or Jakarta, and fly out of Labuan Bajo — now served internationally by Scoot’s twice-weekly Singapore route and AirAsia’s three-weekly Kuala Lumpur route, alongside the busy domestic schedule. Labuan Bajo’s airport expansion and the new piers completed in 2026 have made post-cruise connections noticeably smoother.

Three practical notes from our operations team:

  1. Book the park before the boat is full, not after. Komodo National Park now runs a daily visitor cap of roughly 1,000 people, focused on Komodo and Padar, with entry booked through the official Siora app in three timed sessions. We handle Siora bookings and fee payments for every guest, but in July–August the morning session can fill weeks ahead.
  2. Pack soft bags. Phinisi cabins reward duffels over hard shells, and transfers from east Lombok jetties are simpler with less rigid luggage.
  3. Build in a buffer night. Arrive in Lombok the day before departure and, ideally, keep one flexible night in Labuan Bajo at the end. Boats move on sea time, not airline time.

Our honest advice after a decade of running both: if this is your first time and you have four days or fewer, depart from Labuan Bajo and give the national park your full attention. Choose the crossing if you have already seen the highlights, love the rhythm of a genuine sea passage, or want islands your friends have never heard of in the same trip as the dragons.

FAQ

Do I need the Siora app for the Lombok crossing days?

No. Kenawa, Moyo, Satonda, and Gili Bola all sit outside Komodo National Park, so no Siora booking or park fee applies there — only local landing arrangements your crew handles. Siora bookings, timed sessions, and daily fees apply from the moment you enter the park, usually on day 3 or 4. We register every guest in the app before departure.

How rough is the Sape Strait crossing, really?

In the April–November dry season, it is a two-to-three-hour passage with moderate swell that most guests find entirely manageable — captains time it for the calmest hours and the rest of the route is largely sheltered. In the December–March wet season it can turn genuinely rough, which is why we pause crossings then and run direct park departures instead.

Can I sail the route in reverse, from Labuan Bajo to Lombok?

Yes. Reverse crossings run the same stops in the opposite order, starting with the Komodo highlights and ending in Lombok. They suit travelers finishing their trip in Bali or Lombok, and availability is thinner because most scheduled boats position eastbound. Private charters can run either direction on your preferred dates.
