About Labuan Bajo

A Harbor Town Reborn

Labuan Bajo is a small harbor town on the western tip of Flores Island, and the only viable launching point for a Komodo liveaboard. A decade ago it was a sleepy fishing settlement of stilt houses and wooden jetties; today it has been designated one of Indonesia’s five “super-priority” tourism destinations, and the change is visible everywhere — hillside boutique hotels, rooftop bars looking out over the bay, dive operators, espresso roasters and a modern terminal at Komodo Airport that now receives direct flights from across the archipelago.

Most travelers arrive on the short hop from Bali (around 1h 15m), with onward connections from Jakarta (2h 30m) and Surabaya (2h). The airport sits barely five kilometres from the harbor, and we include a complimentary private transfer on every confirmed booking — a friendly face with a name board, an air-conditioned car, and a ten-minute drive straight to your vessel. There is no stressful logistics puzzle to solve; the journey from baggage belt to sun-deck is genuinely seamless.

The town itself rewards a half-day on either side of your voyage. Climb to the Bukit Cinta or Bukit Sylvia viewpoints for a sweeping sunset over the inner islands, browse the morning fish market along the waterfront, eat astonishingly good wood-fired pizza and fresh-caught reef fish at the cluster of harbor restaurants, or simply settle into a cafe with a Flores-grown coffee and watch the phinisi fleet swing on their moorings. It is the perfect decompression chamber before — or after — the wildness of the park.

The Gateway Experience

Where Every Komodo Voyage Begins

There is a particular feeling that settles in the moment you reach the Labuan Bajo waterfront and see the phinisi fleet at anchor — tall masts, varnished timber, tenders ferrying provisions out to sea. Whatever the journey took to get here, it falls away. From this small, sun-bleached harbor town the entire wild theatre of Komodo National Park is suddenly within reach: dragons, pink sand, manta rays and empty anchorages, all of it a few hours’ sail away.

We design the gateway day so the only thing you have to do is arrive. You are met at the airport, walked to the dock, and welcomed aboard with a cold towel and a briefing — while we handle park permits, provisioning and timing behind the scenes. Build in an extra night in town and Labuan Bajo gives back generously: a hilltop sunset, a long harbor-side dinner, and a slow morning coffee before you slip your lines and head into the park.
